The rest of the day passed in a blur. My mind kept circling back to Landon’s cryptic words and the way he stood there like he owned the world. I couldn’t figure it out. Why was he back? What did he want from me?
As the final bell rang, signaling the end of the school day, I rushed out of the classroom, eager to escape. But as I rounded the corner near the exit, I collided with a hard chest.
“Watch where you're going,” a deep voice muttered.
I glanced up, heart skipping a beat. It was Landon. He must have been following me. The realization hit me like a punch to the gut, but before I could react, he grabbed my wrist, holding me in place.
“You think you can just walk away from me, Isabella?” His voice was low, controlled—too controlled. It made my skin crawl.
“I don’t owe you anything,” I snapped, jerking my arm free from his grasp.
A flicker of something dangerous flashed in his eyes, but just as quickly, it was gone. “You owe me more than you think,” he said, his tone softening, almost like a warning.
I stepped back, my breath quickening. What was he talking about?
Before I could respond, Mia appeared from behind, looking just as unsettled as I felt. “Is everything okay, Izzy?” she asked, eyeing Landon suspiciously.
I nodded, trying to seem normal, though I was anything but. “Yeah, just… just go to the car. I’ll meet you in a minute.”
Mia hesitated but eventually left, glancing back at me one last time.
I turned to Landon, my heart pounding in my chest. “What do you want from me, Landon?”
He studied me for a moment, his expression unreadable. "You’ll find out soon enough.” His lips curved into a knowing smile before he turned and walked away, leaving me with a million questions swirling in my mind.
What had he meant by that? And why was I so terrified of what would happen next? ---
