What Happened in Enugu? A Tragic Story That Raises Serious Questions
A shocking incident in Ugbaike community, Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area of Enugu State, has left many Nigerians asking hard questions about belief, desperation, and the cost of blind trust. According to earlier reports by Streaming Naija, a young man identified as Chikwado Eze reportedly lost his life after being buried alive during a ritual said to be for “fortification” ahead of his planned travel abroad.
It was gathered that Chikwado had recently secured a visa and returned to his village to inform his family. However, things took a tragic turn when his father allegedly insisted that he undergo a traditional ritual believed to ensure success overseas. The ritual was said to have been carried out by a local native doctor identified as Onuwa.
Sources within the community claimed that the native doctor instructed that Chikwado be buried alive for about one hour and thirty minutes, after which he would be brought out. But when the time elapsed and he was exhumed, the young man was reportedly lifeless. The incident immediately threw the community into confusion and anger.
Security operatives were said to have moved in quickly after the incident. The victim’s father and the native doctor were reportedly arrested for questioning as investigations began. Authorities are expected to determine:
- Whether it was a case of negligence
- A criminal act
- Or a deeply misguided traditional practice
Residents have continued to react with mixed emotions, anger, disbelief, and suspicion with some believing that it was a case of ignorance and dangerous belief systems. Others have raised concerns about possible hidden motives, including jealousy or internal family pressure.
But beyond speculation, one thing is clear, a life was lost in a situation that could have been avoided. The case has since drawn wider attention beyond the community, with growing calls for authorities to take stricter action against harmful traditional practices.
While investigations are ongoing, there has been increased public discussion around the dangers of ritual-based “fortification,” especially when it involves extremism and life-threatening procedures. Legal experts say those found responsible could face serious charges if negligence or intent is established. The incident has also renewed conversations about the need for awareness, education, and stronger regulation of traditional practices that put lives at risk.
This tragedy is just one of many incidents that reflect a deeper issue. The growing gap between the rich and the poor, the educated and the uneducated, as well as the unequal distribution of resources, combined with the pressure to succeed, travel abroad, and “make it,” has pushed many into risky paths. But no dream should cost a life.
